A City of Contradictions, A Legacy of Craft
This duality is at the heart of The Fifth Wall, a special new edition that celebrates the 90th anniversary of Edward Fields Carpet Makers. Founded in 1935, Edward Fields is proud to call the electric, artistic hub of New York City its home. The eight carpets that comprise this collection tell twin stories of the company’s past and the city that shaped it.
Designs in Conversation with History
The in-house studio team drew inspiration for some of The Fifth Wall designs from Edward Fields’ archive, which chronicles the company’s history through decades of sketches and textiles. The result: forward-looking, boundary-pushing rugs in conversation with their predecessors. Like the city they reflect, The Fifth Wall carpets are diverse and energetic where skyscrapers huddle together in a collage, a cloud cover hangs over a silk recessed diamond motif, and modern architecture tessellates into mirrored striation.
Past and Present Intertwined
The designers first sketched by hand in gouache, collage, and colored pencil methods that defined Edward Fields’ earliest works. They then hand-tufted using artisanal skills that the brand has championed since its conception. The Fifth Wall melds past and present, structure and fluidity. Layer after layer, it nods to the ever-evolving innovation and resilience of its birthplace and muse: New York City.
